Internet of Things is being implemented at ever increasing speed. Old and new installations are interconnected. Significant number of issues are faced when old installations are revamped to accept modern technology. The primary one is cabling for installation of sensors and such equipment.

The best option is to have sensors with wireless transmitters and blend it in with the background. This brings forward the requirement of power supply to the sensor modules. It is not possible to run cables to provide power supply to the sensors, then the entire purpose of wireless sensors is defeated.

To resolve this issue, one needs to employ low power data transmission technologies like BLE (Bluetooth low energy) to transmit data. This helps the system to run on a button cell that can last for years. It will avoid the need for any external power supply requirements and there by any wiring.

The solar cells can be the power sources for the sensors. Rechargeable batteries may be used for storage. The foot print of a solar cell is minimal as the requirement of power is very small. Another technology like “wakeup on demand” is an excellent way to reduce power requirement and increase longevity of the battery.

Wireless sensors with built-in power supply are critical as they increase the speed of installation and ease maintenance of the system along with preserving aesthetics.
